The importance of doing business with tradition-based knowledge for Indigenous women and their families to ensure sustainable development of the West Kimberley’s ‘Gabiny’ Bush Food Industry: The story of Indigenous Harvest Australia Co-op

  • This presentation explains Indigenous women’s continuing connections to Kimberley-based systems of knowledge. Examples of how family’s harvesting practices creates opportunities for celebration between spiritual and economic relationships with people, land and culture. Traditional knowledge about flora, environment and past practices place women in a privileged position for doing business and providing leadership. Utilising both original artwork and symbolic story from Bugarrigarra-Dreaming history, the paper will provide examples of the importance of linking Indigenous systems of knowledge and practice in building and managing a sustainable industry for the ‘super fruit’ – Gabiny – by Indigenous Harvest Australia Co-operative Ltd.
