Economic impact of the desert
The desert is a major contributor in the Australian economy. It is a major source of mineral resources, labour, agriculture, bush food, tourism, culture and arts. But what is the economic contribution of the desert economy and which of the sectors operating in the desert have the largest multiplier effects? This paper examines the economic impact of the desert. Using a regional input-output model, the contribution of the various sectors operating in the desert to the regional economy is determined. The value of employment, income, regional output and value added are highlighted.
