An electronic/virtual bulletin board system is being developed for 4WDrive travellers, agencies, businesses and communities in remote Outback Australia using location based concepts and technologies. This will facilitate two-way, location-specific and timely communication between such groups, and, through this process help create economic opportunities and raise cultural and environmental awareness in and of, remote desert regions. This paper reports on the outcomes of a stakeholder workshop held to determine the types of information to include in the ‘bulletin board’ for this region and a subsequent field trial of the system in late 2008 on the Oodnadatta Track in South Australia.
