"Small town: small talk, small mind, small vision, dreams" (quote from Family Wellbeing Program participant)

  • Janya McCalman, James Cook University, Australia
  • This presentation explores the role of individual and family empowerment in triggering broader community change, and the critical pathways for this to occur. It is based on a synthesis of evaluation papers and reports of the Family Wellbeing Empowerment Program which has been delivered to Aboriginal participants in Alice Springs since 1998.
Results will be discussed in the context of current emergency measures. Although change is necessary and welcome, Indigenous people themselves have been making efforts to care for themselves and address fundamental issues that affect their lives.
