WaterSmart: Remote management innovations for sustainability in arid rangeland pastoral production
Livestock production in the arid rangelands occurs on extensive properties in excess of 50,000ha. Large paddocks contain 1-4 watering points that require physical inspection for operation and maintenance 1-3 times per week. Four pastoral properties across desert Australia were involved in evaluating remote management technologies that reduce the need to physically visit watering points. Results from the project show the cost of providing stock water can be reduced by 20-50% through incorporating a telemetry system into the enterprise. Financial savings are realised through the reduced use of vehicles to physically visit the watering points and are discussed.
