Informing the sustainable development of northern Australia
There is growing interest in the ability of northern Australia to increase agricultural production. To facilitate sustainable development of the NT cattle industry DPIFM has a program of field research investigating pasture growth and sustainable utilisation levels for different pastoral land types across the NT. Pasture growth is modelled using GRASP, calibrated based on field data collected at SWIFTSYND sites across the NT. Safe levels of utilisation are determined by grazing trials and case studies. These datasets not only inform current carrying capacity, but will also be used to examine climate change implications for the pastoral industry across the NT.
