Augmented Reality in the Alice: Media Augmented Topographical Environments

  • Fred Richardson, Institute for Aboriginal Development, Australia
  • Anne Scherer, NT Parks and Wildlife [to be confirmed], Australia
  • Our Alice group has constructed a portable Augmented Reality system [MATE] for use in remote locations; delivering interactive, location-specific, on-demand media content by transacting with media libraries, public repositories and the Learning Object Repositories Network.

MATE exploits GPS – RFID - Bluetooth technologies.

Tourist Mode: MATE augments and accurately guides tourists’ meandering the Central Australia Outback/townships.
As a scientific/corporate/educational tool accurate to 6 meters, users successively layer multimedia data into areas on Geo-referenced topographies; media-maps evolve. We’ve also modelled media-maps in Second Life.
SCORM compliant IEEE LOM based, these interactive media-maps are machine searchable, scalable and ready for integration.
