How Working the Business of Life can improve learning outcomes for all

  • Mr Robbie Lloyd, Centre for Remote health, Alice Springs, Australia
  • Learning using story to express practical knowledge creation across ages leads to stronger futures.
Objectives and Methods – Four years ethnographic, participative action research study among 60 people living with mental illness and/or intellectual disability, showed ‘Working the Business of Life’ (WTBOL) facilitates new learning.
Results and Conclusion – Story sharing builds mutual modelling of ways of being better at being ourselves. Elders and Young People teach each other, through oral transmission.
Mirroring and feedback (WTBOL) create belonging and identity, motivating more purposeful learning. Safety and trust help people open to receiving new learning, sharing the benefits from their knowing.
