  • The unique Central Australian environment produces specialised plants containing a wealth of secondary metabolites with medicinal functionality. Indigenous communities in this region face significant health and poverty issues and scarce opportunities. A WHO model successfully implemented in rural India, could be utilised to create cash herb crops for indigenous communities by cultivation using socially and ecologically sustainable methods and investing in appropriate education in propagation, collection, storage and dispensation. Consequently, expertise in sustainable farming is developed, surpluses can be sold, and the health of the community is advanced. This model and its application to Central Australian communities will be explored.
