  • 30-60 medicinal plants will be selected using an ethnopharmacological screening approach, from plants historically used in topical treatment of skin and eye wound healing in Australia. Plant extracts (water and ethanol based) will be screened for potential therapeutic value using anti-microbial and cell based assays of inflammation, as well as for wound healing efficacy on complex organ models of skin and corneal tissue. Bioassay guided fractionation, followed by NMR, will identify and characterise the major active constituents, and allow selection of the most promising plants in terms of multi-activity for use as evidence-based complementary medicines and creation of indigenous industries.
